Guide – how to best care for your handmade ceramics

Handmade Danish ceramics should be enjoyed...

and not just in a display cabinet or on a shelf. It's certainly nice to store beautiful ceramics somewhere in the kitchen where they can be seen every day. But they should also be used for delicious coffee, salads, etc., every day, and not just for special occasions.

Good advice for caring for your handmade ceramics

1. Can handmade ceramics be washed in a dishwasher?

For all products on this shop, it will be stated in the product description whether the individual ceramic pieces are dishwasher safe. There are some individual designs that are not dishwasher safe. This applies, for example, to cups and bowls with gold details.

For products where it says 'YES to dishwasher', you can safely use the dishwasher for cleaning the ceramics. However, we recommend using programs at 40-60 degrees to protect the glaze. Higher temperatures can wear down the glaze over time. If you want to take extra good care of your ceramics, handwashing is best.

When placing handmade ceramics in the dishwasher, be careful not to put them right up against other dishes. This prevents them from knocking against each other during washing.

If you have one or more favorite cups, you can protect them by washing them by hand with mild dish soap occasionally. Handwashing keeps the glaze looking good for as long as possible and extends the beautiful life of the ceramics. Also read about our 6 good reasons to choose handmade ceramics.

2. Avoid leaving the cup with a splash of coffee or tea at the bottom for too long

We all know that we don't always rinse, wash, or put the cup in the dishwasher immediately after finishing tea or coffee. But the white glaze inside the cup can sometimes absorb some color from coffee and tea, giving it a brownish color at the bottom that can be difficult to wash away. So, to avoid the hassle of washing away the dark residue at the bottom of the cup, it's better to rinse the cup after you've finished your good coffee and tea.

3. Do not leave ceramics soaking in the sink

Some ceramics are not glazed all the way around – and the raw surfaces can absorb water if left to soak. Therefore, we recommend that for the maintenance of your handmade ceramics, it is best not to leave them soaking in the sink. If they soak, you risk the unglazed clay weakening, which can create unsightly marks or cracks in the glaze from the inside.

4. Storage

Be careful not to stack too many cups or bowls on top of each other. You can optionally place a napkin between the bowls to avoid scratches. To get the most enjoyment out of your handmade ceramics, place the beautiful cups on an open shelf or in a display cabinet so you can see and enjoy the craftsmanship every day.

5. How to avoid giving ceramics thermal shock

You should not pour boiling water into an ice-cold cup. Ceramics do not react well to extreme temperature changes.
